String Quartet performs in North Haven
A string quintet representing SYSO has been rehearsing for several weeks. This group was first suggested and organized by Kaitlin Springer. Now, they have had their first performance! The group consists of Ariel Giemza, Victoria Boretsky, Steven Schaaf, Kaitlin Springer, and Kathleen Wu. They performed a Mozart "Divertimento" and our favorite "Sleepers Awake". They played at the North Haven Congregational Church on Saturday evening, as an opener for a chamber group "Lumos". They played really well, and we are really proud of them! They are now working on a String Quintet by Mozart, which would make a great opener for our Pops concert! Way to go, quintet!
Whiz Kids! SYSO! Change of Rehearsal Site for February 13
Because there is a Band Concert at D. Hand High School on February 13, we will hold our Whiz Kid and SYSO rehearsal at Polson Middle School in the Band Room. The times will be the same. We realize that Hand Band members will not be able to attend this rehearsal, and we wish them good luck at their concert!
Shoreline Youth Symphony News for Janurary, 2008
Shoreline Youth Symphony News
The Shoreline Youth Symphony Orchestra is back rehearsing for our Spring “Pops” Concert and our trip to Washington, DC. Our new music for the Pops concert in May includes “Satchmo!”, which includes music associated with the famous Louis Armstrong, and “Jump Swing Fever”, a collection of hits from the Swing era. We will also perform the “Concertino” by C.Weber with our principal clarinet, Katie Trainer, performing the solo. We are working hard on our music for the competition in Washington, DC, which will be held in April. We will perform the St. Lawrence Overture, March from Somerset, Fanfare and Rondo, and our famous “Lord of the Dance”. All this music will keep us really busy, and our Jazz Band and Fiddle Club are working out new pieces as well.
The “Pops” concert will be held on May 18 at D. Hand High School, beginning at 5:00. We will have more information on this special concert available soon on this web site.
Seven of our wonderful musicians has been selected to perform with the All New England Band and Orchestra. David Dorfman, CJ Tomasevich, Ruiqi Li, Emily Chen, Allie MacDonald, Kaitlin Springer, and Lucy Peng were selected at auditions held last December, and will travel to Vermont in March to participate in this wonderful festival.
Important Changes for Whiz Kids, SYSO, and Jazz Band!
SHORELINE YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
There are a few changes in our upcoming schedule. First of all, the ABC committee had to change the date of the annual ABC concert to NOVEMBER 30. This is still a Friday, but now a week earlier than originally planned. We still play at 7:00, for about 20 minutes. Because of this, our rehearsal on November 28 will be at the downtown Congregational Church on the Green on Meetinghouse Lane in Madison. This rehearsal is really important, but does fall during 1st trimester finals at Hand High School. Due to this, we will shorten this rehearsal to less than an hour, running from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. This rehearsal is extremely important! Please plan your time to study during the day, and you will be home in time to get a good night’s sleep!
Another change involves Wednesday, November 21st. There will be NO rehearsal for SYSO or the Jazz Band on that night! Due to the football game and the early school closing for Thanksgiving, we will not rehearse on Wednesday, November 21. This makes the following rehearsal even MORE important!
There are additional messages for the Jazz Band and Fiddle Club members. If for some reason you do not get the Jazz Band email, please check the website at www.shorelineyouthsymphony.org for some important messages for the Jazz Band and Fiddle Club.
To Summarize:
The ABC Concert has been changed (from December 7) to November 30 . The concert will begin promptly at 7:00 PM at the First Congregational Church on the Green in Madison. We open the concert at 7:00, and will be finished by 7:30 at the latest.
The rehearsal for this concert will be held at the First Congregational Church in Madison on Wednesday, November 28, from 7:00 to 8:00. The rehearsal will be kept short due to the 1st trimester finals at Hand High School.
The November 21st rehearsal is cancelled.
Reminders: Check our website for more messages! Our Winter concert will be held on Sunday, December 9th, beginning at 3:00 PM at the North Madison Congregational Church at 1271 Durham Road in Madison. The Whiz Kids orchestra plays first, followed by our orchestra, which will be joined at the end by the North Madison Church Choir. Full concert dress! New members! Make sure you have the proper uniform dress for these concerts!
SYSO JAZZ BAND
SYSO Jazz Band! Our winter concert is scheduled for Saturday, December 1st, beginning at 7:00 PM at the Killingworth Congregational Church on Rt. 81 in Killingworth. The Fiddle Club plays first, followed by our performance. The entire concert will last less than an hour.
Because this concert follows the ABC concert by one day, we MUST rehearse the Jazz Band on Wednesday, November 28, even though we will be at the Downtown church, and even though there are finals the next day! We have set the Jazz Band rehearsal up for 6:15 PM. We will meet at the church downtown…there is a room in the basement where we can rehearse while the Whiz Kids are practicing upstairs. Then we will join the SYSO rehearsal at 7:00 and be finished by 8:00 PM so everyone can go home and get a good nights’ sleep for finals the next day. Please plan your studies so that you have these two hours available for rehearsal! It is VERY important!
Please email me if you have any questions or concerns about the Jazz Band concert or rehearsal.
WHIZ KIDS ORCHESTRA
The older orchestra, the Youth Symphony, has a concert scheduled for November 30 at the First Congregational Church on the Green in Madison. The orchestra needs to set up and rehearse before this concert, which means that the Whiz Kids have to go there for rehearsal on November 28. The church is located at 26 Meetinghouse Lane in Madison. We will rehearse from 6:00 to 6:45 PM as usual. There will be no Jazz Band practice there.
We also have cancelled the Whiz Kids and SYSO rehearsal scheduled for November 21, the day before Thanksgiving. We will not be rehearsing that night at all.
There are more messages on our website, www.shorelineyouthsymphony.org . Our winter concert is scheduled for December 9 at 3:00 PM at the North Madison Congregational Church at 1271 Durham Road (near Rt. 80). The Whiz Kids play first, followed by the Youth Symphony. This will be a great concert! Additional details will follow shortly on our website.
To summarize:
No rehearsal on November 21st.
Rehearsal on November 28th at the Congregational Church on the Green in Madison. Usual time: 6:00 to 6:45, no Jazz Band rehearsal for Whiz Kids
Concert: December 9th, 3:00 PM, North Madison Congregational Church

Audition Information for the Shoreline Youth Symphony Orchestra
The Shoreline Youth Symphony Orchestra is preparing for another wonderful year. We performed last spring at Carnegie Hall in NYC, so we feel we have reached a really high point for our orchestra.
We do have a number of openings in the orchestra this year. Twenty-four seniors graduated, and several others have moved away, so there are openings in every instrument. We are looking for bassoon, French horn, and oboe in particular, so if you know of anyone in the area who plays one of these instruments, we would love to hear from them! Also, we need cello, viola, and trombone, but openings for any instrument would be available if the student plays at the level we are looking for.
To audition for the orchestra, please email the conductors, using the link provided here, and request an audition time. We will have auditions on September 10 and 11, at Daniel Hand High School on Greenhill Road in Madison, between 7 and 9 PM. Each audition takes about 10 minutes. The student will play scales, a concert piece, and do short sight-reading. The piece for the audition should be at the level of the CMEA high school regionals audition selection. The list of pieces can be found at CMEA.org. Alternate pieces can be found at NEMFA.org. You will be sent the list of scales and pieces when you email the directors indicating your interest in auditioning for the orchestra.
The Shoreline Youth Symphony Orchestra also sponsors a Jazz Band and Fiddle Club. The members of the Jazz Band are also required to play in the Symphony orchestra, and the rehearsals are scheduled on Wednesdays, during the orchestra rehearsal.. Violins (and sometimes others) may join the Fiddle Club, and may be members of Whiz Kids Orchestra or Shoreline Youth Symphony. The Fiddle Club rehearses on a separate evening. The Whiz Kids orchestra also includes a Jazz Band, with short rehearsals during the regular rehearsal time on Wednesdays. The rehearsal time for the Whiz Kids Orchestra is 6:00 to 6:45 PM every Wednesday, and the Youth Symphony rehearses from 7:00 to 9:00 PM every Wednesday. Rehearsals are usually at D. Hand High School, 286 Greenhill Road, Madison.
The Whiz Kids orchestra is designed for students who want to play in a symphonic orchestra at a less demanding level. There are no auditions for the Whiz Kids. Students range from 5th to 8th grade, or occasionally younger. Young players are encouraged to try the Whiz Kids orchestra for a few weeks to see if they are ready to join.
Please feel free to contact the conductors by phone (203 421-3484) or by email, by clicking “contact” on the menu.

Information for Whiz Kids--2006
Dear Whiz Kids and Parents, Sept. 28, 2006
Welcome to the Shoreline Youth Symphony and the Shoreline Whiz Kids Orchestras! We are glad to have you all as members and parents of members. We have some general information which should help get us all off to a great start this year, and perhaps answer some questions you might have.
The Whiz Kids orchestra is designed to be a fun introduction to full orchestra playing. We view it as a preparatory orchestra for the Youth Symphony, and also as a great sounding group for concerts. We rehearse weekly from 6:00 to 6:45 in the orchestra room at D. Hand High School in Madison. We will provide you with a calendar with any days we will not be in rehearsal, due to school closings or other events. We will post this and all general information on our website, www.shorelineyouthsymphony.org. We will also give you our concert dates and times.
It is important to us that the Whiz Kids begin to dress uniformly for concerts. Girls will wear white dress blouses, long black skirts, dress shoes and stockings or dark socks. Boys will wear black dress pants, dark shoes, dark socks, white dress shirt, and a dark tie.
The Whiz Kids and Youth Symphony also include a jazz band which will rehearse during the regular orchestra time. These groups will perform at our two main concerts. Violinists may also join the Fiddle ClubÖ.see Mrs. Clemmons for information on the fiddle club, the rehearsals, and our performances.
The concert dates are as follows:
1. ABC concert: SYSO only, 7:00 PM, December 1, at the 1st Congregational Church in Madison.
2. Winter Concert: SYSO and Whiz Kids, 3:00 PM, December 10, North Madison Congregational Church
(Possible extra performances for Jazz band or Fiddle Club for the holidaysÖTBA)
3. Carnegie Hall Concert, April 26, exact time TBA
SYSO only
4. Annual ìPOPSî concert, SYSO and Whiz Kids, Sunday, May 20, 5:00 PM, D. Hand High School Cafetorium
There may be other special events, rehearsals, or performances as the year goes on.
There are always scholarships available to cover or help cover tuition for Whiz Kids or SYSO members. Please feel free to contact Mr. or Mrs. Clemmons, or communicate through another board member, if you need financial assistance.
We have found that email is the best way to communicate quickly to the members of the orchestras. We will send out an email if we need to change rehearsal, cancel due to weather, or any other change. We will also post these on our website. Please check our website from time to time, and there is a link to the directors if you need to email information back to the orchestra.
We are looking forward to a really great year with the two orchestras, and we hope to keep the lines of communication open. Thank you all for joining our groups, and we expect a really exciting year with Shoreline Youth Symphony and Whiz Kids!

The Shoreline Youth Symphony Orchestra is a complete orchestra program designed to teach many aspects of orchestra membership. All of our activities are important, and we expect each member to participate in all activities. This is particularly important for our weekly 2-hour rehearsals on Wednesday evenings. There are several areas of our program that we want to emphasize at this time. Please read all of the items below, and feel free to contact us if you have any questions or comments.
1. Foremost on our list this year is our trip to perform at Carnegie Hall. This performance is on April 26, in the evening. We are really thrilled to be performing at Carnegie, and every orchestra member will play. The first payment of $50 will be due shortly. The music we will be working on, the extra master classes, the Camp Jewell weekend, and the particular care we will be taking with attendance this year will all be planned with this really special concert in mind. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the entire orchestra will be working toward this all year.
2. Attendance will be taken at each rehearsal. Orchestra rehearsals end at 9:00; no one will be allowed to leave early from rehearsals. If you have too much work to allow two hours for rehearsal, please do not come to rehearsal. Those who leave early will be marked as absent from the entire rehearsal. After three missed rehearsals, you will be asked to not perform at the concert, unless the time is made up in some other way.
Late arrivals to rehearsal are also very disruptive to the group. However, we realize that sometimes other school events create conflicts with the start of rehearsal. If an event will cause you to be late to rehearsal, please email the directors and we will arrange for you to be allowed into the rehearsal late.
3. Camp Jewell is a very important weekend for all SYSO members. This year we will be going on October 6, and returning on October 8. We will leave from the commuter lot at Exit 61 (I-95) at 5:30 on Friday, October 6. We will return to the lot about 2:30 on Sunday, October 8. We realize that there are a few conflicts; students should try to arrange to come to Camp Jewell for as much of the weekend as possible. Please remember to bring your medical forms in quickly so we can make the proper arrangements with the camp. There is no football game in Madison, so Hand high school band members can ride up on the bus with us this year!
I know that ìnewî members are wondering ìwhat is Camp Jewellî? Camp Jewell is basically a retreat for the orchestra, where we rehearse, have small master classes, have games and fun, do some team building and ìgetting to know each otherî stuff, and have a good, relaxing time. Camp Jewell is located in Colebrook, Connecticut, about 15 miles out of Winsted, up in Litchfield County. It is really beautiful there, especially in the fall. Mr. and Mrs. Clemmons have been going for over 15 years, and it is always a memorable time. We stay all together in a big lodge, sleep on bunk beds, eat and rehearse together, cook marshmallows over a fire, and make new friends. Parents: this trip is well chaperoned, with active involvement of our parents, the staff at the camp, and the orchestra directors and extra teachers.
5. There are always scholarships available to cover or help cover tuition for Whiz Kids or SYSO members. There is also scholarship help for trips, including the Carnegie Hall performance.
About the Shoreline Youth Symphony Orchestra
The Shoreline Youth Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1982 by Ann and Bill Clemmons; it is a non-profit organization, providing formal music education and performance opportunities for young people living near the Connecticut shoreline. Its mission is to provide a quality orchestral music experience for interested and talented young musicians. In addition to the formal orchestral setting, members may participate in smaller ensembles, Fiddle Club, Jazz band, and as soloists, thus encouraging personal and artistic growth among the participants.
The development of younger players is very important for the continued growth of the Shoreline Youth Symphony. There is also a younger orchestra, called the Shoreline Whiz Kids Orchestra, which rehearses weekly and performs at concerts. There are no auditions for this orchestra; rather, the students can try a few rehearsals at the beginning of the year or in January to see if they are ready for to play in the orchestra. There is also a Jazz Band for members of the Whiz Kids orchestra. If you would like more information about the Youth Symphony or the Whiz Kids orchestra, please feel free to contact the directors (click "contact" on the menu to the left) or call them by phone at 203 421-3484.

SYSO Jazz Band and Fiddle Club to perform in Guilford!
SYSO Jazz Band and Fiddle Club!
We will be doing a performance at the Shoreline Arts Alliance Showcase on May 20. The Jazz Band will perform at 11:30, and the Fiddle Club will play at 12:00. This should be a wonderful showcase, with all kinds of music, dance, workshops, awards, including a few awards won by Shoreline Youth Symphony members! This performance will not be long, but will make a lot of ìnewî people aware of our program, and possibly attract new members or sponsors. This is a nice opportunity for us, and I know you will all be there and perform at your usual HIGH level! The performance will be at the Guilford Fair Grounds, in a tent. They will provide a sound system, as well as chairs and stands, etc. Please see Mr. or Mrs. Clemmons if you have any questions about this performance.
SHOWCASE Information
Donít forget our special Fiddle Club and SYSO Jazz Band performances! The Shoreline Arts Alliance is sponsoring a huge Showcase for the Arts on Saturday and Sunday, May 20 and 21 at the Fairgrounds in Guilford. Our Jazz Band will play at 11:30 and the Fiddle Club at 12:00. After the Fiddle Club performance, we are sponsoring a Fiddle Workshop with Stacy Phillips at 1:00. I hope a lot of violinists (fiddlers) from SYSO and Whiz Kids will attend our performance and the workshop. The entire weekend looks very interesting, with lots of performances of great variety in performing and visual arts. Our own Cactus Parade may play also.
